Picture
The 7th chakra, known as the Sahasrara or Crown Chakra, is located at the top of the head. It is associated with spiritual connection, enlightenment, and a sense of oneness with the universe.

Yoga Practices for the Crown Chakra:
  1. Meditation: Regular meditation is a powerful way to activate and balance the crown chakra. Find a quiet space, focus on your breath, and allow your thoughts to drift. Visualize a bright white light shining down from above, entering your crown chakra, and filling your entire body with peace and tranquility.
  2. Pranayama (Breathing Exercises): Deep breathing exercises can help to stimulate the crown chakra. Try techniques like ujjayi (victory breath) or nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing). These practices can help to calm the mind and promote a sense of connection.
  3. Visualization: Visualization is a powerful tool for activating the crown chakra. Imagine yourself surrounded by a vibrant, shimmering light, representing the energy of the crown chakra. Feel this energy expanding and radiating outward, connecting you to the universe.
  4. Mantra Chanting: Chanting mantras can help to stimulate the crown chakra. The Bija (seed) sound for this chakra is Om (the sacred sound of creation).
  5. Yoga Poses: Certain yoga poses can help to open and activate the crown chakra. These poses often involve stimulating the physical crown, such as matsyasana (fish pose) or a variation of yoga mudra.
Benefits of Activating the Crown Chakra:
  • Increased spiritual awareness: Activating the crown chakra can enhance your spiritual connection and understanding.
  • Improved intuition: It can help to develop your intuition and inner guidance.
  • Enhanced creativity: The crown chakra is associated with creativity and inspiration.
  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Activating this chakra can help to reduce stress and promote a sense of peace and tranquility.
  • Greater sense of oneness: It can foster a deeper sense of connection to yourself, others, and the universe.
Activating the crown chakra is a gradual process. Be patient and consistent in your practice, and you may experience a deeper sense of spiritual connection and enlightenment.

  • Visualization: Visualize a bright, blue light radiating from Ajna Chakra, filling your mind with clarity and intuition.
  • Affirmations: Repeat positive affirmations to boost your confidence and self-belief, such as "I trust my intuition" or "I am filled with wisdom and understanding."
  • Yoga poses: Certain yoga poses can stimulate Ajna Chakra, such as child's pose, downward-facing dog, kneeling yoga mudra.
  • Essential oils: Frankincense, lavender, and sandalwood are associated with Ajna Chakra and can be used in aromatherapy to promote balance and relaxation.

Svadisthana - the sacral chakra

If you don’t know what chakras are yet, refer back to the post on Muladhara, which includes an introduction to the subtle energy body.

Have you ever felt stuck in a rut, devoid of passion and creativity? Or maybe you struggle with expressing your desires or forming healthy relationships? These could be signs of an imbalanced sacral chakra.

The sacral chakra, known as Svadhisthana in Sanskrit, is the second chakra in the body's energy system. Located 2-3 finger widths below the navel, it's associated with the color orange and the element of water. This chakra governs our creativity, sensuality, emotions, and zest for life.

When the Sacral Chakra Flows:
A balanced sacral chakra allows you to tap into your creative potential. You feel a sense of abundance, joy, and confidence. You embrace your sexuality and express your desires healthily. You find it easy to connect with others on an emotional level and form fulfilling relationships.

Signs of a Blocked Sacral Chakra:
A blocked sacral chakra can manifest in various ways. You might experience a lack of motivation, feeling stuck or uninspired. You could struggle with emotional expression, bottling things up or becoming overly sensitive. Other signs include difficulty connecting with others or experiencing intimacy issues.

Revive Your Sacral Chakra:
The good news is there are many ways to heal and balance your sacral chakra. Here are a few practices to get you started:
  • Move your body: Dance, swim, yoga, hula hooping, or any activity that gets you moving can help unblock stagnant energy. In yoga, hip openers are especially helpful here.
  • Embrace your creativity: Engage in activities that spark your creativity, whether it's painting, sculpting, writing, gardening, or playing music.
  • Connect with nature: Spending time in nature, especially near water, can be very grounding and cleansing for the sacral chakra.
  • Affirmations and visualization: Repeating positive affirmations related to sensuality, creativity, and abundance can help shift your mindset.
  • Sacral chakra healing foods: Orange-colored foods like oranges, mangoes, and carrots are believed to nourish the sacral chakra.

Next up: Manipura, the solar plexus chakra. Tap into your POWER.

Manipura - The Solar Plexus Chakra

If you don’t know what chakras are yet, refer back to the post on Muladhara, which includes an introduction to the subtle energy body.

The third chakra is Manipura, which means “jewel in the city” or “lustrous gem.” It is located above the naval, at the solar plexus, between the ribs, and includes the stomach, thoracic region of the back, and digestive tract.

The element associated with manipura is fire, and it’s associated with our drive, power, and sense of self. A balanced manipura offers us a feeling of  empowerment. Like all the chakras, it’s important to find the perfect balance. Too much empowerment might create arrogance or egoistical behavior. Not enough empowerment may result in being afraid to speak up at all. We want that balanced sense of self and confidence. Think of tending a fire. You want to give it enough fuel to keep it burning, but not so much that it rages out of control.

To help balance manipura, consider a walk in the sun or spending time by a fire. Affirmations or mantras such as “I am power” or “I have power” can help convince your mind of your intentions as well.

In our yoga practice, we can focus on twists (like matsyendrasana) and core strengtheners, such as plank (phalahakasana) and upward boat pose (urdvha navasana).

When you experience physical issues such as ulcers, heartburn, IBS, or acid indigestion, consider that it may be more than just your physical body. It could be your energy body sending you a message that you need to find your power or as they said back in the 60’s “find yourself.”

Muladhara - The First Chakra

4/10/2023

Picture
We live in a culture where we pay more attention to our gross anatomy (those parts visible to the naked eye) than we do to our subtle body. In this context, I am speaking of the physical parts of us—muscle and bone, organs, blood, skin, etc. If you’ve been a student of yoga for a minute, though, you know that yoga is concerned with more than just the physical body.

In yogic philosophy, we are composed of three bodies; the physical, the subtle, and the causal. The subtle body, also known as the astral body, includes energy, mind, and intellect.

Nadis are channels for energy in the subtle body, much like veins and arteries are channels for blood to move through the physical body. Chakras are “wheels” of energy created where the energy channels intersect. We have seven major chakras (pronounced with the “ch” sound, not the “sh” sound) in our subtle body. Each chakra is associated with a different element, sense, sound, color, gland, and part of the body as well as having a core psychological focus.

This post is an introduction to muladhara, the first chakra. Muladhara means root support. It is located at the base of the spine, and includes the legs, feet, and eliminatory system. The element associated with muladhara is earth, and it is associated with a sense of being grounded or rooted and feeling secure and stable. When our life seems out of control and our basic needs are threatened, we will be out of balance in this energy center. For instance, if we have financial difficulties, are going through career or relationship instability, or lose our connection to our close friends or family. To help balance muladhara, spend time outdoors, literally on the earth, walking, hiking, or gardening. Consider a grounding massage, drumming, or resting under a weighted blanket.

In our yoga practice, we can focus on strong standing postures, such as tadasana (mountain) and utkatasana (chair pose).

When you experience physical issues in the feet, legs, or with digestion, consider that it may be more than just your physical body. It could be your energy body sending you a message that you need to stand up for yourself and find more stability and security in your life.
